CAIRO: Three police conscripts and six members of Ultra White Knights (UWK), Zamalek club’s hardcore fans, were injured in clashes that took place Thursday, in the Dawaran Shubra district in Cairo, security source from Cairo Security Directorate told Youm7.
The source added that 19 members of UWK were arrested.
Hundreds of UWK members staged a march Thursday protesting the arrest of 11 of its members last week after being accused of attempting to assassinate the head of Zamalek club Mortada Mansour.
The march was on its way to the attorney general’s office downtown, but it was intercepted by police tear gas in Shubra, while the UWK set tires ablaze and threw stones at police forces.
After clashing with the police in Dawaran Shubra, the UWK called on its members to gather at Cornish el-Nile instead, however, the UWK Facebook page announced that “there are deadly clashes between UWK members and security forces.”
Security forces had intensified their presence around the attorney’s office in anticipation of any violent acts by UWK.
On Aug. 18, Mansour survived an assassination attempt, after assailants opened fire on his car, while he left the club’s headquarters.
