CAIRO: Civil protection forces are still trying to control a massive fire that broke out in a four-story chemical factory in Maadi Saturday evening, and may take all day to extinguish the blaze, Youm7 reported Sunday.
Three emergency personnel were injured putting out the fire after an explosion due to the presence of chemicals.
They were transferred to the hospital for treatment.
Cairo Governor Galal Saeed headed to the fire scene and said that after the fire is controlled, there will be an investigation by the prosecution to reveal the reasons behind it.
Youm7 reported the fire was controlled in three stories, but the large amounts of chemicals and flammable substances stored in the basement has prevented responders from putting out the fire completely due to repeated explosions.
“Firefighters are suffering from the chemical substances because they are highly flammable and should be cautiously handled to prevent explosions like those that caused the injury of three of the staff so far,” said Mamdouh Abdel Kader, the head of the General Directory of Civil Protection in Cairo.
About 24 fire vehicles are present at the location; 15 from the Civil Protection Forces, six from the Civil Defense Authority and three others from the armed forces.
The fire was prevented from spreading to a nearby paper factory by a security cordon placed around the affected structures.
