CAIRO: Three Egyptian women have been nominated to participate in three international beauty pageants for 2014 in the first national beauty contest in Egypt since the January 25 Revolution in 2011.
Lara Debbane, 20, will travel in January 2015 to take part in the Miss Universe contest in Miami, Florida in the U.S. Amina Ashraf, 19, will go to London to compete for the Miss World title and Nancy Magdy, 19, will participate in the Miss Earth beauty pageant in the Philippines.
Debbane’s aunt, Hoda Abboud, was Miss Egypt 1986, according to Youm7.
The contest took place in Egypt’s Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism.
Egypt’s political and social turmoil since the January 25 Revolution, followed by a year of rule by Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, did not leave room for such a competition to resume until this year.
Beauty pageants first began in Egypt in 1929, but they are largely condemned by religious institutions.
