CAIRO: U.S. special presidential envoy for the global coalition to counter the Islamic State group General John Allen and the U.S. extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Iraq Brett H. McGurk will arrive in Cairo Wednesday to participate in talks on global efforts to fight IS, said the U.S. department of State Tuesday evening.

Both senior officials will come from Amman where they met with the Iraqi tribal leaders and sheikhs Tuesday, discussing the international efforts to combat the ISG, said the U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Jen Psaki in the daily press briefing.

“They also discussed our support for Prime Minister Abadi’s vision of a united Iraq and a united Iraqi National Guard that both empowers local populations to protect their communities and incorporates those forces within the formal national security structure,” Psaki added.

After their visit to Cairo, both officials will travel to Ankara where they will discuss the security situation and threat of the group on Syrian Kurds in Kobani (a city in Syria near the Turkish border), she added.
