CAIRO: Leader of Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis Walid Waked was arrested Friday by military forces in Arish city, North Sinai Governorate, for the murder of 3 policemen in a car bombing Wednesday, Youm7 reported.
Two officers were killed immediately in the blast, and another died later at the hospital. The attack took place after two separate similar incidents in Cairo and Tanta, the capital of the governorate of Gharbia.
Last Friday, another major leader of the militant group along with 21 alleged terrorists was killed after clashes with the armed forces, according to military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.
On this official Facebook page, Samir posted a picture of the leader’s dead body, showing a bearded man who appears to have been shot twice in the chest.
Violence in the Sinai markedly increased following the ouster of Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, with attacks being made regularly against the military and police forces.
In the past year, hundreds of people in North Sinai have been killed in military and police raids for their alleged involvement in terrorism. This is in addition to the destruction of dozens of homes that have been demolished for allegedly being “hubs for terrorists.”
