CAIRO: Two border guards were killed and two conscripts are missing after a smuggling tunnel they were working to destroy collapsed near Egypt’s Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip Saturday, Youm7 reported.

Another soldier was injured in the collapse. Also, a 21-year-old private is in critical condition after he was shot in the back from an unknown source earlier on Saturday, medical sources in North Sinai told Youm7.

On Friday, eight suspects were arrested in Arish on charges of perpetrating an attack with explosive devices against a police vehicle on Thursday, killing three officers.

Hundreds of military and police personnel have been killed in deliberate explosions and shootings by extremists since the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in summer 2013, and hundreds of Sinai-based militants have been killed and arrested by security forces.
