CAIRO: Egyptian government ruled Wednesday to amend the penal code to classify rape as a capital offence, Youm7 reported.

Article 290 of the Penal Code will be amended; this article stipulates that each convicted of kidnapping a woman by himself or with others to rape her shall be sentenced to life imprisonment or death.

The new amendments will make such penalties applied to adults who commit rape against a male or female victim, with toughening the punishment to the death penalty if the victim were a woman, according to a statement issued from the Cabinet.

Aly Atef, a lawyer in the Arab Network for Human rights Information told The Cairo Post Wednesday that those convicted of attempted rape would face the death penalty.

For sexual assaults against male victims, the punishment was increased to life imprisonment, an increase from the previous sentence of 3 to 7 years imprisonment, Atef continued.
