CAIRO: Robert Stephen Beecroft arrived in Cairo Thursday as the first U.S. ambassador on Egyptian soil since August 2013; the embassy had been managed by chargés d’affaires for over a year.
Beecroft in his new post succeeds Anne Paterson, who was viewed in a hostile light by many Egyptians for a perception she favored ousted President Mohamed Morsi. Patterson had been in office for two years before she left her post on Aug. 31, 2013, days after the violent dispersal of the Islamist Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda Square sit-ins. She was promoted to become the Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.
Three chargés d’affaires handled the empty post until Beecroft—who previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and Jordan—was received by American embassy staff at Cairo International Airport.
