CAIRO: President Abdel -Fatah al-Sisi has congratulated the newly elected Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, who on Monday won Tunisia’s presidential elections, according to a presidential statement Monday.
In a phone call with his Tunisian counterpart, Sisi confirmed Egypt’s full support of Tunisia and its keenness to enhance cooperation the bilateral cooperation to a level that meets the ambition of Egyptian and Tunisian peoples adding that he hopes for “a new era of solidarity and Arab co-operation,” and the continuation of Tunisia’s social and economic development, according to the statement.
During the call, Sisi said that the numbers of Tunisian people who voted for Essebsi [55 percent] reflect the confidence of the Tunisian people placed in him.
On the other side, the Tunisian leader Essebsi, thanked Sisi for his call describing the relations between the two countries as “strategic”, and that they will stand in solidarity facing different challenges.
Tunisia’s Independent High Authority for Elections on Monday declared Essebsi, 88, the winner of the run-off presidential elections in Tunisia, over his opponent interim president Moncef Marzouki.
