CAIRO: Telecom Egypt, the State’s main telephone company, said in a statement Saturday afternoon that Internet services in parts of Egypt were disrupted Saturday due to local telecommunication landlines being damaged 18 kilometers outside Alexandria.
Many areas witnessed slow or cut Internet services because of the damage, including the news websites of The Cairo Post and its parent Youm7 newspaper.
Telecom Egypt said the affected areas ranged from Kafr el-Dawwar on the Mediterranean all the way down the Nile to parts of Cairo.
Mohamed Azab, a spokesperson for Telecom Egypt, said in a phone call with The Cairo Post Saturday that he was unsure of what caused the damage to the lines, but the company would release that information as soon as it became available.
According to the released statement, a team was sent to fix the problem, and alternate cables were provided to return service to normal until repairs are completed.
