CAIRO: Security forces killed one alleged terrorist and arrested 30 suspects in a raid Friday in Egypt’s restive Sinai Peninsula, the armed forces spokesperson Mohamed Samir stated.
The suspect was shot dead in a fire exchange with the military personnel stationed at North Sinai’s town of Sheikh Zuwayed.
Army forces also destroyed three vehicles and 10 motorbikes with no license plates and were reportedly used in carrying out attacks targeting security forces personnel and public and military facilities, according to the statement.
Since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi July 3, militants have staged repeated attacks on military and police sites, killing dozens of security personnel.
North Sinai in particular has been a hotbed of activity as well as security raids; the group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, a militant Islamic organization, which has claimed responsibility for a number of terrorist attacks in the Sinai as well as in Cairo, is thought to maintain its base in North Sinai.
