CAIRO: Two policemen guarding a Minya church were killed by anonymous gunmen Tuesday morning, Youm7 reported.
Masked assailants shot the low-ranking officers outside The Virgin Mary church in the Upper Egyptian governorate with machine-guns, eye witnesses told Youm7.
The police have stated in the past few days that all churches would be strictly secured during the Orthodox Christmas celebrated Jan. 7.
Churches in Egypt have been attacked in several governorates, especially in Upper Egypt, by Islamists in the aftermath of the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.
On the New Year’s Eve of 2011, at least 21 people were killed in a car bomb attack on a church in Alexandria.
