CAIRO: Senior member of Gamaa Islamiyya Assem Abdel Maged was sentenced to 15 years in prison in absentia over killing three protesters during the events of June 30 in Asyut, Youm7 reported.
In the same case, five defendants were sentenced to three years in prison, and 29 were acquitted.
The prosecution accused the defendants of: creating a gang, gathering, protesting, resisting authorities, attacking police forces, possessing weapons and Molotov cocktail and killing protesters.
During the trial, the prosecution screened a video showing Abdel Maged on June 25, 2013 while calling on people to counter-protest anti-Morsi demonstrations planned for June 30, 2013.
Following the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013, Abdel Maged fled to Qatar; Egypt has requested the Gulf nation to hand him over, and has frozen his domestic assets.
