CAIRO: The armed forces have killed four militants and arrested 27 others in raids targeted in the restive Sinai Peninsula during the past 48 hours, military spokesperson Mohamed Samir said Wednesday.
The militants were killed in a fire exchange with security forces following raids that targeted 28 alleged militants’ hideouts in North Sinai’s cities of Sheikh Zuwayed and Arish, according to Samir.
Vehicles and motorbikes that have been reportedly used in attacking security forces were also destroyed, he added.
The Egyptian army is currently carrying out extensive operations in North Sinai to limit jihadists’ bombings and the targeting of police and army personnel. Attacks against the police and army escalated since Islamist President Mohamed Morsi was ousted by then-Minister of Defense Abdel Fatah al-Sisi on July 3, 2013.
