CAIRO: Egyptian authorities have demolished 270 of total 1,220 houses located on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border as part of the second phase of the Sinai-Gaza buffer zone, Youm7 reported Thursday.

The demolishing of homes in the 1 kilometer-wide zone is divided into two phases; each of them is 500 meters.

The displaced residents of the demolished homes have been compensated with between 700-1,200EGP ($94-$162) according to the type of residence.

The second phase will relocate 2,050 families from 1,220 homes in the area of the buffer zone, which was announced in October 2014 following a deadly attack on military personnel in North Sinai claiming the lives of 31.
