CAIRO: Hosni Mubarak’s former Prime Minister and ex-presidential candid Ahmed Shafiq issued a statement through the National Movement Party to mourn the passing of Saudi King Abdullah.

He said that “Egyptians will always remember his solidarity with Egypt through tough situations,” and called the newly appointed King Salman “a best successor to a best predecessor.”

Mubarak and his two sons had their embezzlement convictions in the presidential palaces case overturned by the Court of Cassation on January 13, 2015. This was the last case, in which Mubarak has been standing trial; his lawyer Fareed el-Deeb said Mubarak has already served the three-year sentence in the case, and that he would be released soon from Cairo Military hospital, where he is held due to his health conditions.

In November, the Cairo Criminal Court dropped Mubarak’s charges of complicity in killing protesters during the January 25 Revolution.
