CAIRO: A doctor who performed a female genital mutilation procedure on a 13-year-old girl, that resulted in her death in 2013, was sentenced to two years in prison with labor and fined 500 EGP ($67) by the Mansoura Appeal Court Monday.
The victim’s father, based in the Delta governorate of Mansoura, received a suspended three-month prison term; he would serve the term if he committed any crime in the next three years.
Aga Court of First Instance had dropped the charges against the defendants in November 2014 after the father and the doctor reconciled. The prosecution immediately appealed the ruling.
The sentence is the first application of a 2008 law, which criminalized Female Genital Mutilation.
