CAIRO: A total of 312 persons were released in late January:119 were released in observance of the January 25 revolution anniversary and Police Day, and 193 others were given a conditional release following a monthly prison service sector meeting, Youm7 reported.
The releases follow a presidential decree that established a committee to check the prisoners’ records and make a ruling in their case.
On July 28, 2014, President Sisi ordered pardons for 354 prisoners on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. Presidential pardons can only be granted to those who have had final verdicts passed in their case. A number of high-profile cases, including Ahmed Doma, Alaa Abd El-Fattah, and the Al Jazeera journalists, have not have final verdicts issues, so they were not eligible for pardons, despite high media attention on the cases.
During national holidays, the Interior Ministry traditionally announces a number of pardons for those who are already spent half of their sentences inside jail and have good behavior records.
