Infograph: Egyptian airstrikes and kidnappings in Libya

CAIRO: Monday witnessed a series of airstrikes in the Libyan cities of Derna and Sirte, in retaliation for the mass execution of 21 Egyptians, all Copts who were kidnapped from Sirte in early January 2015.

The relationship between Libya and Egypt has been particularly tense for the last year, with increasing kidnappings and violence against Egyptian workers, and even attacks inside Egyptian territory.

The map below provides an overview of the cities and areas central to the Egyptian-Libyan crisis.


An estimated 500,000 Egyptians still remain inside Libya for work, according to Egyptian government figures.
