CAIRO: A military helicopter shelled “terrorist targets” in Rafah, Sheikh Zuwayed and east of Arish in North Sinai, preliminarily killing five and injuring three, a security source told Youm7 Monday.

Security forces sprayed a group of gunmen with bullets after they allegedly attempted to attack a security station near the borders with Gaza in Rafah, a military source told Youm7, adding that the group were compelled to flee the area.

Egypt has intensified security measures at the eastern and western borders since targeted shelling of Islamic State group (IS) locations in Libya Monday.

On Jan. 29, over 30 people were killed in a series of attacks claimed by Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, which paid allegiance to IS in November 2011.
