CAIRO: Attorney General Hisham Barakat is considering the legal status of a number of jailed defendants currently pending investigations accused in the clashes and riots that have taken place since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, Youm7 reported Thursday.

A number of complaints were issued to Barakat’s office from prisoners’ relatives and friends earlier demanding their release; most of the complaints were regarding activists and students arrested during the dispersal of Rabaa al-Adaweya and Al-Nahda sit-ins, along with Al-Azhar university clashes, which took place more than 18 months ago, Youm7 reported.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi announced prior to the fourth anniversary of January 25 Revolution that he would consider pardoning a number of youth who may have been unjustly put in jail, without giving further details.
