173 ‘terrorists’ killed during February military operations in Sinai

CAIRO: Military spokesperson Mohamed Samir announced Sunday that 173 alleged ‘terrorists’ had been killed in separate attacks in the month. Number of the targeted armed men was reported to be affiliated to Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis terrorist group.

The statement published on Samir’s Facebook page stated that 16 of the “terrorists” were killed in Arish City, another 13 were arrested in it including two Palestinians, along with destroying 22 ‘terrorist’ base.

In Sheikh Zuwayed, forces reportedly stopped several attacks on checkpoints and police stations used mortar shells, along with targeting booby-trapped cars and vehicles.

In Rafah city, other separate ‘terrorist’ attacks were defused as it was targeting check points near the borders, and 97 suspected militants were arrested during the operations according to Samir.

Several airstrikes were used during the operations, eyewitnesses told Youm7, adding that they saw Islamic State group-affiliated militants setting traps on the roads.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi previously ordered excessive measures to secure North Sinai, especially after a series of attack that took place in January killing more than 40 military personnel and civilians. A state of emergency in the governorate has been in force since late October, after another bomb attack killed more than 20 military personnel.
