CAIRO: Egyptian Squash player Raneem el-Welily was crowned the 2015 Windy City Open (WCO) champion Thursday after her fight against the Malaysian Nicol David in the Women’s final in Chicago with a score of 3/1.
The 26-year-old champion is the first Egyptian woman to win the championship; she won the title of New York-based Tournament of champion (TOC) in January to become the world’s No. 2 women’s squash player.
In the men’s final, British player Nick Matthew took the WCO championship after beating Egyptian Mohamed Elshorbagy Thursday in the Men’s Professional World Squash Tour (PSA), according to the PSA Twitter account. Elsharbagy lost the final with 0-3.
“I’m really proud with how I dealt with everything the past 2 weeks. Tit’s been so tough and to reach the final is something I will be proud of!!,” Elsharbagy, 25, tweeted following his defeat.
“Sometimes u have to say too good…and Nick was just too good the whole tournament for everyone..congrats to him!,” he added. Elshhorbagy also won the TOC championship in January.
