CAIRO: Two monks have been hospitalized after they were injured with knives in a Monday fight at theAbba Macarius Monastery in Wadi el-Rayan protectorate in Fayoum governorate, Youm7 reported.

Monks at the ancient monastery received media attention when they confronted bulldozers deployed to dig a new road passing through the massive land claimed by them. The fight erupted as some of them wanted to allow the road and others did not, according to Youm7.

Egypt’s Orthodox Church sided with the government when the case began, stripped six monks of their monasticism, and claimed many others of them “alleged monasticism.”

A source at the Diocese of Fayoum told Youm7 Monday that the fight “proves they are impostors,” and reiterated that the church has demanded the authorities withdraw the “illegally claimed” land.
