Iraqi foreign ministry summons Egypt’s ambassador in ‏‎Baghdad

CAIRO:  The Iraqi foreign ministry summoned Tuesday the Egyptian Ambassador in ‏‎Baghdad to issue a formal complaint concerning a memorandum regarding the characterization of Shiite Iraqi Volunteer Forces as “militants” by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed Al-Tayeb.

Earlier in March, Tayeb also said he was ”watching with worry the crimes they [Shiite forces] are committing against peaceful citizens who have no connection with IS.”

Tayeb accused forces allied with the Iraqi military of using ‘fighting ISIS” as a cover for their “barbaric acts of killing Sunnis, burning their homes and mosques,” and he demanded the Iraqi military to be careful choosing the troops that fight the Islamic State group with them.

A statement issued by the Iraqi foreign ministry, published on their website Tuesday demanded the Egyptian government clarify its real position regarding Tayeb’s statement, and said that his remarks may harm relations between the two countries.
