CAIRO: The presidency media office Saturday congratulated Yehia Qallash, who was announced as the new head of the Journalist’s Syndicate March 20, Youm7 reported.
A letter from the presidency stated that President Sisi congratulates all journalists for the “honorable image” that showed during the elections; and he wished the Syndicate more development and progress.
Qallash defeated his competitor Diaa Rashwan with about 1,948 votes, as Rashwan received only about 1,079 votes.
The elections that took place Friday were originally scheduled March 6; however they were delayed after the general assembly failed to reach a quorum of 50 percent plus one of all eligible voters.
The syndicate’s board of members was elected in March 2013 for a four year-term. Upon his nomination as chairman of the syndicate in 2013, Rashwan, also the head of the Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic studies, pledged to “restore the union from the hands of the ruling regime.”
