Update: 13 soldiers reported killed in North Sinai

CAIRO: Thirteen soldiers were killed after unknown assailants opened fire on two ambushes and threw missiles on residents’ homes in Sheikh Zuwayed, North Sinai, anonymous medical sources told Youm7 Thursday.

The two ambushes targeted were located on the Arish-Rafah Road early Thursday; security forces and the armed group exchanged fire, and 15 “terrorists” were killed, a security source in North Sinai told Youm7. The official death told announced by the military, however, remains at five dead among the armed forces.

The victims and the injured were transferred to the Arish General Hospital.

Since the ouster of the President Mohamed Morsi July 3, 2013, extremist elements in North Sinai have launched numerous attacks against military and police forces in the peninsula. Hundreds of security personnel were killed in different attacks, and subsequently an intensive security crackdown was launched by the military in this area of the peninsula.
