CAIRO: Minister of Defense Sedqi Sobhi arrived in Saudi Arabia Thursday straight from a three-day visit to Pakistan; Sobhi will meet with his Saudi counterpart Mohamed bin Salman to discuss conditions of Arab national security, stated military spokesperson Mohamed Samir.
The visit aims to enhance coordination related to unfolding events in the region, Samir said in a statement.
The Saudi-led Decisive Storm operation began March 25 at a request from Yemeni President Abd-Rabu Mansour Hadi to curb Houthi rebels approaching Aden, who are believed to be backed by Saudi Arabia’s Shiite rival Iran, and have controlled the Yemeni capital of Sanaa since January.
Saudi Arabia has voiced its plan to request ground troops from Egypt and Pakistan, with Islamabad’s approval thus far uncertain. Iran, on the other hand, has called the Houthi takeover a revolution, and has stated that the oil-rich company would not emerge victorious from the operation.
