CAIRO: Police forces have intensified their presence in Arish city streets as part of their ongoing campaign against “extremist elements” in North Sinai, Youm7 reported.
Security personnel have installed more fixed and mobile ambushes around the city and maintained inspections at every ambush in hunt for the outlawed.
North Sinai Security Directorate said in a Thursday statement that the security campaign has arrested 91 convicts at large within the past 24 hours, according to Youm7.
Army and police forces in the northern tip of the peninsula are frequently targeted by Islamist militants, who have escalated their attacks against the military since the 2013 ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi.
Arish city witnessed two separate attacks leaving some 15 soldiers killed just hours before Egypt’s spring festival celebrations Monday.
The first attack was an explosion targeting a military vehicle that killed six members of security forces. The second attack killed another other nine personnel when a car laden with explosives crashed into the Arish Third Police Station.
The military regularly announces scores of “terrorist” elements killed and hundreds of hidden smuggling tunnels uncovered amid their intensified campaign aimed to combat the radical Islamist insurgency’s expansion in the peninsula.
