CAIRO: The board of the Al-Ahly club decided Sunday to fire coach Juan Carlos Gariddo following a series of losing matches, Youm7 reported.
Gariddo, 46, led Africa’s Century football team since the beginning of the season in which he achieved two titles; the first was the Egyptian Super Cup in 2014 after the team beat its historical rival Zamalek, and a few months later the team won the CAF Confederation Cup.
The board’s decision was preceded by a Saturday loss to Al Maghrab Al Tatwany of Morocco, in the African Champions League.
Gariddo was an outspoken critic of the team’s board; in an interview with Sabba Ayam magazine, published two weeks ago, he accused the board of not listening to his requests concerning changing the medical crew or securing new players for the team squad.
Al Ahly comes ranks third in the Egyptian League, in which its rival Zamlek comes in first.
Youm7 reported that Al Ahly’s board is currently negotiating with several Egyptian coaches to replace Garrido.
