CAIRO: Security authorities at Egypt’s Sallum Border Crossing arrested 83 Egyptians allegedly attempting to illegally cross into the Libyan territories through desert routes, Youm7 reported Sunday.

A police report was filed about the incident, and the arrested will be referred to specialized prosecution, Youm7 quoted Al-Anany Hamouda, head of Marsa Matrouh Security Directorate as saying.

This sort of arrest is routine at the land border with Libya, at which hundreds of infiltration attempts by Egyptians and foreigners have been stopped by authorities. Despite a security vacuum in the oil-rich country, many Egyptians still attempt the crossing in search of work.

Hundreds were arrested at the border during April; some 150 including Sudanese citizens were halted April 27, and 25 were arrested April 15 and 94 others were stopped April 13.
