CAIRO: Al-Jazeera Journalist Mohamed Fahmy is to announce “exclusive” developments to his case in an international press conference at the Four Seasons Nile Plaza Hotel, Monday.
In a Thursday statement, Fahmy said that a prominent international figure will be attending the conference, without giving more details. Many media professionals and writers are also expected to attend.
Fahmy and his colleague Baher Mohamed are currently standing retrial in their case known in the local media as the “Mariott Cell,” in which they are facing terrorism-related charges and publishing false news in favor of the banned-Muslim Brotherhood group.
Since they were arrested in Dec. 2013, along with their Australian Colleague, their case has grabbed international attention and support by media organizations and press freedom advocates.
In February, Fahmy and Mohamed were released pending their case, and Greste was deported to his country per an extradition decree. They have spent over a year in prison over what they called “sham” charges and trial procedures.
They will stand before court on their next hearing on Saturday, May 9.
