Former president Hosni Mubarak - YOUM7

CAIRO: Former president Hosni Mubarak will be placed in Tora prison temporarily until the Public Prosecution officially calculates the remaining period for his imprisonment over the “presidential palaces” case, a security source told Youm 7 Saturday.

A three-year sentence against Mubarak and his sons Alaa and Gamal on charges of embezzlement of public money in case know in media with “presidential palaces” case was ruled Saturday.

The defendants were accused embezzling an estimated 125 million EGP of state funds that were allocated to renovate the presidential palaces; they appealed an initial verdict released in May 2014.

However, Egyptian penal code stipulates then when the final verdict is released, the period which the defendant spent in custody pending investigations or trial, must be deducted from the prison sentence.  Mubarak and his sons have already spent more than three years in detention.

Mubarak was released from jail after he was acquitted on other corruption cases in January; but he has been under house arrest in the Maadi military hospital in Cairo.
