CAIRO: Fouad Badrawy, a senior board member of Wafd Party, has filed a complaint against Al-Sayed Al-Badwai, the partry’s chairman, before the Parties Affairs Committee, accusing him of squandering funds, Youm 7 reported on Sunday.
“Our party’s budget exceeded 92 million EGP when el-Badway came to office as a chairman, now it’s one million; there was serious squandering,” Badrawy told Youm 7.
The party held a press conference last week by veteran members, calling for withdrawing confidence from Badawi. They claim that Badawi’s recent call for a general-assembly vote over amendments to the party’s bylaws aims to prevent them from running for the party’s board elections May 15.
The party faced a similar confrontation in 2008 when its then-chairman Noaman Gomaa closed the party’s daily paper after some members used its premises to hold a sit-in pressuring him to step down.
The Wafd Party is Egypt’s oldest liberal party. Established in 1919, it was the leading party before the 1952 Revolution, which abolished the Egyptian monarchy.
