CAIRO: Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab vowed to punish negligent heads of districts where sewers are left uncovered and accidents are caused by naked light, Youm7 reported Saturday.

“Head of districts with sewers left open or where accidents are caused by naked light will be referred to investigations and dismissed,” Mahlab said in a statement Saturday.

Accidents caused by open sewer have recently increased across the country. On May 14, a 33-year-old man died after falling in a sewer, while trying to open a manhole in Meit al-Dareg town in Qalyubia.

Manager of the wastewater company along with other officials in Cairo’s northern district of Ma’sarah were temporarily suspended from work earlier this month pending investigations after a 4-year-old child fell into a sewer line during the periodical purification process for the sewers.
