MAZAR-I-SHARIF:An Afghan official says nine people, including a woman, have been shot dead in an attack on their guesthouse in a remote rural district in the country’s north.
Abdul Basset Ayni, director of the rural development department in Balkh province, says the attack took place in the Zari district at 2 a.m. Tuesday, when gunmen burst into their rooms as they slept.
He says the workers, 11 in all, were in the district to do construction work; the other two workers escaped. Ayni says the identity and motivation of the attacks is not yet known but an investigation is underway.
Balkh has recently been beset by insurgent activity. The provincial police chief’s spokesman Shir Jan Durrani says military forces last week launched an anti-insurgent operation in Zari.
