CAIRO: A passerby was injured Friday after a bomb went off nearby a house of a police officer in Cairo’s southern district of Helwan, Youm7 reported.

The bomb was placed inside the trunk of a private car. Pictures of the explosion were sent Friday via Youm7’s new whatsapp application.

The blast has left five cars damaged.  A security cordon was imposed, and Police forces and bomb squad deployed at the bombing site in search for other potential explosive devices.

Youm7’s whatsapp service has started in May, where readers can send stories, videos, complaints and news via mobile number 01287692411.

The cabinet approved Wednesday a proposal by the Interior Ministry to criminalize negligence in informing authorities about bombs, and punish those accused with one year in prison, Youm7 reported.

Bombs and explosives targeting public utilities, as well as security personnel and facilities have become routine in Egypt’s streets. The attacks have left destructions in vital services, such as transmission towers and water plants, as well as causalities among forces and civilians.
