CAIRO: Al Ahly football team beat its longtime rival Zamalek 2-0 in Cairo derby Tuesday putting Zamalek’s Egyptian Premier League title celebrations on hold.
Momen Zakareya, Zamalek’s former midfielder who moved to Al Ahly in January, has scored a well-taken double one each halftime.
Zamalek, who leads the domestic table with 83 points, now needs to gain only a single point from their two remaining matches to secure the title. Al Ahly has not been defeated by Zamalek since 2007 after Al Ahly had already won the title.
Al Ahly won the Egyptian Champions League eight-times-in-succession while during the past ten derbies, Ahly won four times, while the other six ended in a draw.
The match took place in Alexandria’s Borg al-Arab stadium without audience per a decision issued by the interior ministry in February banning any audience from attending football games indefinitely. At least 19 people have been killed and dozens injured at Cairo’s Air Force Stadium in March ahead of a national league football game between Zamalek and Enppi.
Zamalek’s Hazem Emam received a straight red card 10 seconds before the end of th e match for a kick on Ahly’s midfielder Sobhy.
