250 Brotherhood sentenced to life for torching Behira governorate building

CAIRO: Alexandria military court on Tuesday sentenced 250 defendants; reportedly belong to the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) group, to life in prison for torching Beheira governorate building and a police station in 2013, Youm7 reported.

The defendants include former Behira governor Gamal Heshmat alongside several MB parliamentarians.

The court also sentenced other 249 defendants for hard labor jail terms ranging from five to 15 years.

The defendants face numerous charges including killing seven people, damaging a number of police officers and civilians ‘vehicles following the forcibly dispersal of MB supporters sit-ins at Rabaa al-Adawyia and al-Nahda square in 2013.

Security forces have conducted wide-spread arrest campaigns targeting the Brotherhood since the dispersal.

The Ministry of Interior has intensified its crackdown on the MB members since the cabinet declared it a “terrorist organization” on Dec. 25, 2013.
