CAIRO:Russia has gifted Egypt a high-speed missile corvette that took part in the New Suez Canal inauguration Ceremony, Youm7 reported Saturday.

The offensive missile boat Molnyia P-32 arrived in Egypt’s Mediterranean city of Alexandria at the end of July, the state news agency MENA reported Saturday.

According to Youm7, the 57-meter-long boat is equipped with four Moskit missiles, and is designed to destroy surface ships with its weapons of surface-to-surface and surface-to-air capabilities.

Egypt has sought to diversify the sources of weaponry sources in the wake of the tension with the U.S. following the military-backed ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Egypt and Russia signed a military technological cooperation agreement in March, and in July, Egypt received three French Rafale fighter jets, the first batch of a deal worth $5.7 billion.
