CAIRO: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi decreed Saturday to add 500,000 acres to a one-million-acre piece of land that has been allocated for cultivation in the coming period stated presidential spokesperson Alaa Youssef.
Sisi met with the prime minister and the ministers of housing utilities and urban communities, water resources and irrigation, agriculture and land, contributing to the achievement of the overall development process sought by the state.
The president stressed the importance of the project’s completion to the fullest by providing for equipment as soon as possible at the best possible price, Youssef said, adding that the reclaimed land will benefit from the crop installation, where a sugar factory will be established depending on the cultivation of beet and the most tolerant crops to high temperatures, according to the statement.
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hossam Maghazi said that the system will use underground wells to check the sustainability of water resources for wells.
Agricultural lands have been exposed to degradation due to water and wind erosion as well as increasing numbers of livestock, according to FAO.
