CAIRO:  A total of 230 electoral symbols have been assigned for candidates in the parliamentary election, the High Elections Committee (HEC) announced Tuesday.

“There will be 160 symbols for individual candidates and 70 symbols for party-list candidates,” head of HEC Ayman Abbas was quoted by Youm7.

Symbols dedicated for individual candidates include images of a watch, hand, water pump, torch and motorcycle while those running the election through the party-list system have 70 symbols to choose from including car, sailboat palm tree, pyramid, umbrella among others, he added.

“The priority in terms of electoral symbols distribution would be granted to candidates who apply first,” Al Ahram quoted Abbas Tuesday.

The candidacy registration for the elections scheduled to kick of Oct. 18 began Sept. 1 and will last until Sept., 12 with an initial candidates’ list to be announced Sept.13.

Egypt’s House of Representatives will comprise of 596 members, 448 to be elected as independents, 120 through the winner-take-all party lists system, with 28 seats to be appointed by the president, HEC announced in a press conference Sunday.
