CAIRO: The 31st round of the Alexandria Film Festival for Mediterranean Countries kicked off Wednesday.
This year’s festival, which sports the slogan “Cinema in the Face of Terrorism,” will present over 300 films from 33 different countries, and is dedicated to Egyptian movie star Mahmoud Yassin.
Culture Minister Abdel Wahed al-Nabawy, Alexandria Governor Hany al-Messiry and a wide array of local and international public figures took part in the festival’s inauguration ceremony, which took place at the conference center of the Bibliotheca Alexandria Wednesday evening.
The Italian film la Nostra Quarantena premiered at the inauguration.
The Egyptian operetta “120 Years of Cinema” was played during the inauguration ceremony while the Egyptian director Mohamed Abdel Aziz, Colombian actor Lou Castel and the Russian director Shakhnazarov are among those to be honored during the festival.
A total of 15 feature films will be competing for the late Egyptian actor Nour al-Sherif prize worth 50,000 EGP ($6,500.)
