CAIRO: A total of 27 suspected militants were killed and 154 others were arrested in North Sinai in the second day of campaign of “The Right of the Martyr,” a massive military operation launched late Sunday, stated military spokesperson Mohamed Samir Tuesday.
The suspects include 74 persons from Sheikh Zuwayed, 15 others from Rafah, and nine from Arish; the 56 others were arrested before fleeing to South Sinai, Samir added.
The military forces seized a number of weapons and cars, and destroyed a number of their havens, Samir’s statement continued.
In the first day, the military forces have killed 29 suspected militants and destroyed a number of armed vehicles used by the militants in their attacks against military and security forces.
An army officer and conscript were killed, while four others were injured when a roadside bomb targeted their vehicle.
Egypt has witnessed a significant rise in terrorist attacks since the military-backed ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule. According to the Interior Ministry, militant attacks have killed more than 500 security personnel since then.
