CAIRO: Mexico’s Foreign Minister Claudia Massieu arrived in Cairo Wednesday to follow up on the killing of eight Mexican tourists in Egypt’s Sahara Desert, Youm7 reported.
Massieu, who arrived in Cairo airport Wednesday early morning with relatives of the eight victims, is scheduled to meet with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi at the Ittihadiya presidential palace in the afternoon.
The Egyptian Interior Ministry stated Monday that Egyptian security forces had killed 12 people and wounded another 10 “by accident” when they mistook a convoy of mainly Mexican tourists for a militant group in the Sahara Desert near the Bahariya Oasis.
The six Mexicans who survived the incident told Mexico’s ambassador to Egypt they had been bombed by helicopters and an aircraft while they stopped for a break in the desert, according to Reuters.
Massieu will accompany the six survivors and remains of the victims back to Mexico, according to Youm7.
