CAIRO: Nadia Hamdi, mother of prominent Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef, passed away Tuesday morning. Youssef made the announcement on his Facebook page this morning.
The cause of his mother’s death has not been released.
Several journalists, activists, artists and political movements have offered condolences to Youssef.
“God and to him we shall return,” said Lamis al-Hadidi, a prominent TV show host, through Twitter
Other politicians, public figures and governmental organizations also offered their condolences.
Youssef is a heart surgeon, satirist and columnist who hosts pupular television show Al Bernameg (“The Program”), a satirical news show along the lines of John Stewart’s Daily Show. In 2013, Youssef was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.
