CAIRO: Cairo Airport customs foiled an attempt to smuggle 1,262 poached wild birds and rabbits to Qatar, Youm7 reported Monday.

After inspection, the customs seized 352 dead golden sparrow, 510 frozen doves, 10 hares and 390 mummified quails. The estimated value of the seizures is 56,500 mEGP.

A number of similar attempts have foiled by different bodies in the government.

In May, Environment Police in Alexandria arrested two before slaughtering marine turtles, the hunting of which is internationally prohibited. Forces seized nine live turtles and returned them to the sea. The arrested were referred to prosecution over violating the law.

In April 2015, the Ministry of Environment signed a memorandum to draft an assessment of the environmental effects of windmills, and possibly shut them down during key emigration times, as a way to protect migratory birds from wind energy plants.
