CAIRO: The total number of returning Egyptian pilgrims reached around 50,000, and 12,000 others will return from Saudi territories in the coming few days, said the Egyptian Minister of Awqaf (Religious Endowment) Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa stated Wednesday.
He added during his meeting with President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, that the Ministry is exerting all efforts to identity the missing Egyptian pilgrims among the victims of the Mecca stampede, according to a statement from the presidential office.
The total of at least 148 Egyptian pilgrims were killed in Mecca’s Mina stampede, while 86 remain missing, according to the Egyptian Consulate in Jeddah. The stampede occurred while almost 2 million pilgrims from all over the world were simultaneously performing the “stoning of the devil” ritual as part of their hajj.
The total number of Egyptian pilgrims performed the 2015 hajj reached 62,479, said the executive head of the Egyptian Hajj Mission in previous remarks to media.
