CAIRO: A total of 500 prayer rooms were closed during the Friday prayer in Alexandria to prevent “extremists” from delivering radical or political sermons, according to an Endowment Ministry statement.

The closures adhered to ministry regulations to guarantee that the religious discourse in Friday sermons would not be exploited by “radicals,” Alexandria undersecretary of the Endowment Ministry Abdel Nasser Naseem stated.

The Endowment Ministry branch in Alexandria “succeeded in clearing mosques from electoral propaganda,” as parliamentary elections continue until December, Nassem added.

Per a ministry decision, Alexandrians only perform the noon prayer on Fridays at mosques, as all prayer rooms in the governorate are closed on Fridays.
