CAIRO: The coming week will see a crackdown on noise and waste pollution on the Nile, the Ministry of Environment announced, after boarding two boats Saturday that were reportedly in violation of noise standards.

Environmental Minister Khaled Fahmy stated that the ministry is working in coordination with the Tourist Police to protect the river.

Stretches of the Nile in downtown Cairo are lined with many tourist boats that are rented out for parties and tourist groups, often blaring music into the night.

Polluters in the Nile will face fines between 50,000 ($6,389) and 200,000 EGP ($25,559,) with fines doubled for repeat offenders, per a law signed by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi earlier this month, the official state gazette reported.
